Chevrons on the left sleeve of a Turco or Poilu

Dear Sirs,

I have just bought a small book in English (!) about the French Poilu and it is superb - as my French Grandfather was a Turco (4 Tirailleurs Algeriens - classe de 1917).

The book raises a number of questions for me as one of the photos of my Grandfather shows him in uniform with the fouragerre (must be the Legion of Honneur as it is one colour). Therefore I am assuming that the photo was taken after the armistice as the fouragerre was only awarded in 1919.

HOWEVER ! there are no inverted chevrons on the left sleeve of my Grandfather's uniform (and the left sleeve is clearly visible).

From the book, it seems that the Poilu or Turco received his first inverted chevron for one year in action and every other chevron for each six months thereafter.

My Grandfather left Algeria fro France in February 1916 - he survived the war and was sent to Morocco to put down the uprising there.

NOW thoses are the facts - the question is - If my Grandfather was in France in the army in February 1916 - surely he should have at least three chevrons on his uniform - Why are they missing !!!!!!

Le port des chevrons de présence et de blessures est obligatoire.

Cependant, André , avez-vous la date certaine de cette photo ? N'est-elle pas antérieure à la première année de présence au front de votre parent, alors que sont régiment était déjà titulaire de la fourragère (aux couleurs de la Légion d'honneur, en effet, pour le 4e RMT) ?

D'où question subsidiaire: à) quelle date le 4e RMZ a-t-il obtenu cette fourragère /LH ?...

Fourragère le 19 12 18, donc mon hypothèse ci dessus ne marche pas ! . La photo est bien d'après la guerre.
