Hello everyone,
138 British soldiers are buried today in the Nesle Communal Cemetery in the Somme. They died there in April and May 1917. From April to June 1917, Casualty Clearing Post No. 21 (CCS) was run by a nun in Nesle, and the dead were buried in a plot near the western corner of the communal cemetery.

Sur le site Images Défense, une photo d'avril 1917 est intitulée « Nesle (Somme), soldats irlandais », mais dans la description du reportage, on trouve ces précisions :
« Il prend par ailleurs des vues de la réparation d'un pont par le génie, de la réparation d'une rue par des Ecossais, de plusieurs cimetières et chapelles allemands, des tombes de deux aviateurs français, l'adjudant Gibaud et le sous-lieutenant Le Nivel. »

Par ailleurs, j'ai trouvé une photo intéressante sur le site argonnaute : Nesle - Mars 1917 - Habitantes et soldats britanniques
On la retrouve dans les archives britanniques, dans une série de photos concernant le retrait allemand de mars-avril 1917. Il est précisé que les hommes font partie de la Highland Light Infantry (infanterie légère des Highlands).

Quelques éléments de contexte pour ces soldats écossais enterrés à Nesle.

Certains de ces hommes appartiennent au 15ᵉ bataillon du Highland Light Infantry, surnommé le "Glasgow Tramways Battalion" et également, plus joyeusement, le "Boozy First". Il s’agit d'un de ces "Pals Battalions", que l’on pourrait traduire en français par "régiment de copains".

Selon le site du conseil municipal de Glasgow, ce bataillon fut levé en septembre 1914 en seulement seize heures. James Dalrymple, directeur des tramways de Glasgow, convainquit 1100 de ses collègues de s’engager dans cette unité. Comme la moitié des conducteurs rejoignit le bataillon, il fallut recourir à de la main-d’œuvre féminine : ce furent les premières conductrices de tramway de Glasgow.

Le 16e bataillon du Highland Light Infantry était surtout recruté dans la Boys' Brigade, un mouvement chrétien de jeunesse fondé à Glasgow en 1883 et précurseur du scoutisme.

Le 17ᵉ bataillon, dont l'historique est cité ci-dessous, était connu sous le nom de Glasgow Commercials, ou "bataillon de la Chambre de commerce de Glasgow". Ses recrues provenaient surtout du milieu étudiant et des cadres des entreprises locales.

Extraits de l'historique du 17e Bataillon du Highland Light Infantry (Ville de Glasgow, Écosse). Débarqué au Havre le 23 novembre 1915. En arrivant à Nesle le 19 mars 1917, les troupes reçurent un accueil triomphal de la part de la population française. On découvrit alors que les habitants étaient littéralement affamés, car les Allemands avaient pris leurs rations depuis plusieurs jours. Puis, il prend position à Germaine (Aisne).




SUR LES TALONS DE L’ENNEMI

Le Bataillon quitta Germaine à minuit, le 1er avril 1917, et avança par compagnies, à intervalles de 200 mètres, à travers la campagne en direction de Fluquières. À leur arrivée, ils traversèrent le village, un amas de ruines fumantes, et, sur la route principale de Saint-Quentin, après environ un kilomètre, ils atteignirent Roupy avec ses carrefours détruits, puis poursuivirent vers un point proche de Savy où le Bataillon se déploya. Attaquant à 5 heures du matin, ils avancèrent, surmontèrent la résistance et prirent Savy.

Dans le village, les Boches opposèrent une résistance acharnée, et de violents combats eurent lieu avant qu’ils ne soient repoussés au-delà du talus de chemin de fer au nord du village. L’essentiel des combats se déroula dans le voisinage d’un verger à l’extrémité sud du village, et c’est là que le 11e Border Regiment vint prêter main-forte pour chasser l’ennemi obstiné.

Une fois le village franchi, de lourds dégâts furent causés par les tirs nourris de mitrailleuses provenant d’un point fort ennemi installé dans un entonnoir de mine. Avec l’aide de deux mitrailleuses Lewis, l’entonnoir fut bientôt aux mains du 17e, et un feu intense fut dirigé contre l’ennemi en retraite. Par la suite, le Bataillon commença à creuser des tranchées (vers 6 h 30) et consolida rapidement ses gains, bien qu’il fût soumis à de violents tirs d’artillerie, de mitrailleuses et de tireurs isolés.

Dans l’après-midi, une nouvelle attaque fut menée par la 96e Brigade, et avant la soirée, le Bois-de-Savy était entre leurs mains. Le Bataillon fut relevé dans la soirée et se dirigea vers des abris sur la route de Fluquières à Douchy, mais l’endroit était tellement dévasté qu’une grande partie de l’unité dut bivouaquer.

Les pertes totales au cours de cette journée de combats s’élevèrent à 103 hommes, dont 31 tués. Durant la semaine suivante, le Bataillon souffrit des rigueurs de l’hiver, aggravées par des bombardements incessants, et dut s’employer à fortifier ses positions. Le 9, de magnifiques reconnaissances furent effectuées, valant au Bataillon de vives félicitations. L’après-midi de ce jour-là, quatre patrouilles furent envoyées pour recueillir des renseignements sur Fayet et sur le terrain entre Francilly et Saint-Quentin. Une patrouille se rendit sur la crête dominant Saint-Quentin, une autre pénétra dans une tranchée allemande près de Fayet, une troisième s’approcha à 300 mètres de Fayet, et la quatrième reconnut les approches sud du village — et de précieuses informations furent ainsi obtenues.

La route de Nesle à Saint-Quentin est longue et cruelle, mais, en ce début de 1917, elle fut pour le 17e H.L.I. le chemin de la gloire. Ils avançaient dans la trace de l’ennemi en retraite, avec l’éclat de la victoire pour affermir leurs cœurs et les bénédictions d’un peuple délivré pour emplir leurs oreilles. Les trompettes éclatantes du romantisme les appelaient depuis la Cité cathédrale, et leur sang s’échauffait à cet appel.

Telles furent les impressions qui les conduisirent, comme le reste de la Division, à surmonter des obstacles effroyables, naturels et diaboliques. Ils trempèrent dans la neige, grelottèrent sous le vent glacial ; ils souffrirent de la faim et peinèrent sur la route, mais ils « tinrent bon », et leur récompense fut la chute du village de Savy.

On se battait alors tout le long du front de 80 kilomètres, et Savy n’occupa pas une grande place dans les chroniques du temps, mais ceux qui participèrent à sa prise, et à celle du bois situé deux kilomètres plus loin, savaient qu’ils avaient accompli un acte héroïque.

Pas de repos : Francilly et Holnon tombèrent ensuite, et les hommes purent apercevoir les flèches de Saint-Quentin. Ils vécurent plusieurs jours dans des trous creusés à même la terre, et le climat les meurtrissait impitoyablement. Puis, un matin sombre, le 13 avril, ils se rassemblèrent en silence et s’allongèrent dans les champs, tandis que l’aube se levait au chant des oiseaux, mêlé aux hurlements et aux sifflements du barrage d’artillerie. La Division attaquait Fayet, le dernier bastion ennemi avant la ville.

Avant l’assaut, des silhouettes vert de gris étaient ramenées vers l’arrière. Beaucoup d’autres gisaient déjà, tordues de manière grotesque, dans les champs bruns et striés, et ceux qui avaient échappé à l’enfer combattaient encore sporadiquement dans les bois au-delà du village. Mais leurs tirs de snipers furent bravés quelques jours encore, et puis, une nuit, les hommes regagnèrent faiblement, chancelants, les villages cauchemardesques jusqu’à Germaine, pour enfin se reposer.

Le 15 mai, le Bataillon partit pour Curchy, via Voyennes et Nesle, et le jour suivant pour Rosières, puis jusqu’à Hangard le 18, où le « repos » se poursuivit jusqu’à la fin du mois, moment où ils se rendirent à Villers-Bretonneux. Des villages de la zone reconquise, il est presque impossible de donner une description au sens habituel, si ce n’est que, tandis qu’on pouvait retrouver quelque apparence de rues dans certains d’entre eux, la majorité n’était plus que des amas de décombres de maçonnerie littéralement criblés de cratères d’obus. Mais il était remarquable que, dans des villages comme Nesle, les civils montraient une nette amélioration physique grâce à une meilleure alimentation et à la vie sous occupation britannique. Pendant leur séjour à Hangard, le Quartier Général du Bataillon occupa le château de Hangard — l’un des plus beaux châteaux de France. (Il fut démoli lors de l’offensive allemande de 1918.)

ON THE HEELS OF THE ENEMY

The Battalion moved off from Germaine at midnight on April 1st, 1917, and proceeded by Companies at 200-yard intervals, cross country, to Fluquieres. Arriving there, they passed through the village, a pile of smouldering ruins, and on the main St. Quentin road, and about half a mile along it, they reached Roupy with its destroyed crossroads and proceeded towards a point near Savy where the Battalion deployed, and, attacking at 5 a.m., moved forward, overcame the opposition, and took Savy.

In the village the Bosche put up a desperate stand, and some fierce fighting took place before they were pushed beyond the railway bank north of the village. Most of the fighting took place in the neighbourhood of an orchard at the southern end of the village, and here the 11th Border Regiment joined forces in helping to drive out the stubborn enemy.

Once through the village, serious destruction was caused by heavy machine-gun fire from an enemy strong point in a mine crater. With the aid of two Lewis guns, the crater was soon in the hands of the 17th, and a heavy fire was directed on the retreating enemy. Thereafter the Battalion started to dig in (about 6.30 a.m.), and soon consolidated their gains, although subject to strong artillery, machine-gun, and sniping fire.

In the afternoon a further attack was made by the 96th Brigade, and before evening Bois-de-Savy was in their hands. The Battalion was relieved in the evening and moved off to take up quarters in dugouts on the Fluquieres–Douchy Road, but the place had been so badly knocked about that a large portion of the unit bivouacked.

The total casualties in this day's fighting were 103, 31 of whom were killed. During the following week the Battalion suffered from the severe winter conditions, coupled with incessant shelling, and had much to do strengthening their positions. On the 9th some magnificent patrolling was done, for which the Battalion was deservedly congratulated. In the afternoon of that day four patrols set out to gain information of Fayet and the ground between Francilly and St. Quentin. One patrol went to the ridge overlooking St. Quentin, one went into a German trench near Fayet, one went within 300 yards of Fayet, and the fourth reconnoitred the southern approaches of the village—and much valuable information was accordingly gained.

The road from Nesle to St. Quentin is a long and cruel one, but in these early days of 1917 it was to the 17th H.L.I. the pathway to glory. They were sweeping onwards in the track of the retreating enemy, with the glow of victory to strengthen their hearts and the blessings of a delivered people in their ears. The echoing trumpets of romance called to them from the Cathedral City, and their blood stirred to the call.

These were the impressions that led them, in common with the rest of the Division, to surmount appalling obstacles, natural and devilish. They soaked in the snow, and froze in the keen blast; they starved and toiled on the way, but "stuck it," and their reward was the fall of Savy village.

There was fighting all along the 50-mile front just then, and Savy did not loom very large in the chronicles of the time, but those who took part in its capture, and in the taking of the wood a mile beyond, knew that they had achieved the heroic.

There was no resting; Francilly and Holnon were the next to fall, and the men were within sight of the spires of St. Quentin. They lived for some days in earth holes, and the weather flayed them unmercifully. Then one dark morning, the 13th of April, they assembled silently and lay down in the field, whilst dawn broke with singing of birds, and the shriek and whistle of the barrage. The Division was attacking Fayet, the enemy's last stronghold beyond the city.

Before they went over, grey- and green-coated figures were being brought down. There were many other grey and green figures grotesquely contorted in the brown, ribbed fields, and those of them who had escaped from the inferno fought it out intermittently in the woods beyond the village. But their sniping was braved for a few days more, and then one night they staggered weakly back through nightmare villages to Germaine for rest.

On the 15th, the Battalion moved off to Curchy, via Voyennes and Nesle, and on the succeeding day to Rosieres and so on to Hangard on the 18th, where the "resting" was carried on until the end of the month, when they proceeded to Villers-Bretonneux. Of the villages in the regained area, little or no description in the normal sense is possible beyond the fact that, while some semblance of streets could be traced in some of them, the majority of them were simply masses of masonry debris literally peppered with shell craters. But it was noticeable in such villages as Nesle that the civilians showed a very marked physical improvement as the result of better feeding and life under British occupation. While at Hangard, Battalion Headquarters occupied Hangard Chateau—one of the finest chateaux in France. (It was demolished during the 1918 German offensive.)

Chapeau bas ! Je suis admiratif et respectueux face à vos connaissances sur ce sujet.

Nous autres Français restons toujours pantois face au phénomène très britannique du recrutement de ces jeunes et la levée des bataillons entiers dans un quartier ou une bourgade. Pour sympathique que cela puisse apparaître ce phénomène peut avoir de graves conséquences quand ces bataillons sont décimés comme lors de la Bataille de la Somme en juillet 1916 et entraîner une saignée insupportable dans les forces vives d'un village.

Un complément sur Nesle et ces Écossais.

Traduction d'un passage de Proud Heritage, the story of the Highland Light Infantry, par le Lieutenant-Colonel Oatts, (The House of Grant, Glasgow, 1961) :

Le 16ᵉ H.L.I. entra dans Nesle dans la soirée [du 19 mars], au son des cornemuses jouant Scotland the Brave. La cavalerie avait annoncé que la ville était libre. Les Allemands avaient emmené tous les adolescents pour une raison obscure. Les habitants, restés sur place, accueillirent les soldats avec enthousiasme, mais le bataillon eut bien du mal à protéger ses prisonniers, que la population — encore meurtrie par ses souffrances récentes — voulait lyncher.

Avant que le H.L.I. ne quitte le village, le président français, M. Poincaré, fit son apparition. Plus tard, lors de son installation comme Lord Recteur de l’Université de Glasgow, après la guerre, il rappela cet épisode.



Extrait du discours du Président Poincaré à l’Université de Glasgow, le 13 novembre 1919, en tant que Lord Rector de l’université, le premier étranger à recevoir cet honneur. Il prononça son discours en anglais. Dans cette allocution, il témoigna de sa compréhension de la culture et de l’identité écossaises, rappela l’alliance traditionnelle entre l’Écosse et la France et rendit hommage à l’héroïsme des soldats écossais tombés en France pendant la Grande Guerre. Enfin, il évoqua le cas précis de Nesle en 1917 :

Combien de vaillants Écossais reposent ainsi dans le sol de France, après avoir combattu pour l’idéal commun de nos deux nations ? Aux mères et aux veuves de ces héros, je donne l’assurance que leur image restera à jamais gravée dans la mémoire et le cœur de mon pays, et que les femmes françaises prendront soin de leurs tombes comme s’il s’agissait de celles où reposent leurs propres maris et enfants.

J’avais sous les yeux, en 1917, un spectacle qui symbolisait parfaitement cette gratitude nationale. La petite ville de Nesle venait d’être libérée par des troupes écossaises. Je me hâtai aussitôt de voir ces pauvres gens : les habitants étaient heureux et joyeux ; ils avaient attendu si longtemps leur délivrance ! Délivrance qui, d’ailleurs, fut malheureusement de courte durée, car, l’année suivante, la ville fut de nouveau prise par les Allemands. Mais, en 1917, la population ne pensait qu’à son bonheur présent.

Un bataillon écossais manœuvrait et défilait avec une parfaite discipline ; un orchestre écossais jouait sur la place des airs que la foule applaudissait avec enthousiasme : Scotland the Brave et The Kilt’s My Delight. Les joueurs de cornemuse allaient et venaient au milieu des applaudissements et des chapeaux agités, tandis que le tonnerre des canons se faisait encore entendre au loin.

Pendant ce temps, les habitants ne cessaient de me répéter :
« Quelles belles troupes ! Et comme nous sommes heureux de les accueillir ! Les Allemands ne cessaient de nous dire que l’armée britannique ne valait rien, et qu’ils n’avaient jamais vu d’Écossais devant eux sur le champ de bataille. Nous savions bien qu’ils mentaient. Néanmoins, nous ne supposions pas que ces soldats, qu’ils feignaient de mépriser autant, fussent si remarquablement entraînés ! »
