Crew Members Inkerman/Cerisoles - WW1 - Inscrit Maritimes

I am researching the sinking of the minesweepers Inkerman and Cerisoles on Lake Superior November 24 1918 for a related work of fiction. I am interested in the crew - who they were, how they got to be on these ships, their family history (fishermen?), etc. Most were from Bretagne.
In local newspaper articles from the day, I have found the names of the crew members, I know they came to Fort William, Ontario, Canada by train between July and October of 1918 (via New York?), that one of the contingent, Lieutenant Rault, died of the Spanish Flu while here and is buried here, that some of the sailors had fought in the battle of the Somme (how?!?) and had received medals, that the crew members became local celebrities when here, treated to dinners in family homes, trips to the fair, gifts (cigarettes, fruit etc.), and that they crew of the Sebastopol that did survive the storm that sank the other two minesweepers were surprised at the intensity of Lake Superior's fury.
If anyone has info that can point me to the background of the crew (ie how did they fight at the Battle of the Somme AND serve in the navy?), how Inscrit Maritime worked (how fishermen became crew or fought on land), etc. I would be grateful. I would like to build a background for these sailors.
And if there is interest in the Canadian side of these ships I am happy to share resources (photos, newspaper articles, the Eulogy given by Captain LeClerc for Rault, etc.) Thank you!
