French reburials

Were French war dead after the war- already buried on the French battlefields in military war graves - allowed to be reburied/relocated to civilian home town cemeteries when their Next of Kin requested to do so (after November 1918)?

Yes they do . A great amount of bodies were claimed by their relatives after the war and buried in their village/city cemetery.

Thank You for the answer! Can you confirm that they had to pay the sum of 45 Franc for the reburial. If yes what was a 45 Franc value in ca 1919, compared to today's value?

45 francs x 1,18211 = 53,2€
For example, the first price to post a letter was 0,15 francs in 1919.

Sorry, how stupid from my side, Arnaud is correct. Now the value of 53 Euros is known to all of us. It would be interesting though to understand the real value of 45 Franc in 1919 when we only knew what -for example- a worker's salary was about in 1919. If he, lets say, only makes 300Franc, then 45 FF is pretty heavy. Anybody knows some salary values for 1919 or 1920?

Sorry but after many research, I have only one example :


For 1920, the wage was : 20 000 francs de 1995 = 20 000x 0,18102 = 3620 euros
3620 euros = 3620 x 0,84755 = 3068 francs de 1920 (for a year)

You can read it in Gallica
and the "decret" (september 28th 1920) always for reburial is here in Gallica too (5 pages). In all these official texts, the family had not to pay 45 francs for reburial.

Finally, 240 000 body were tranferred.

Well Arnaud thank you very very much for your comprehensive research; with respect to the links which I have checked all (but to my regret my school French does not allow me to understand the details); I could not find the respective text from 28 Sept 1920; can you help me and give me further directions?
As far as I understood, the law said no reburials until Jan 1919, after that date it was allowed (link no 2)?

For the link to 28 sept 1920, this is the good one, but I have forget the page number : Page 4629. Put this number in this place :

To reburial the body in the family cemetery, family had three month to make a request (they had to make it before January 27th 1921). After the transfers were (and still are) prohibited. Before the law, they were prohibited too.
Allowed reburials beginning in 1921.
