Il s'agit d'un Spad 17 modifié-Le fuselage est identique mais la fixation de l'aile supérieure a été renforcée (voir photo)-L'aile superieure est en forme de fleche avec un angle prononcé (préfigurant les futurs Spad Herbemont).Les ailes inferieures presentent une incidence inversée et sont repousées vers l'arriére (c'est pas visible sur la photo..)
La raison pour laquelle ces modifications ont été pensées n'est pas claire-Peut-etre qu'on désirait un meilleur champ de vision que celui du Spad XIII ?.Le Spad XXII a été testé en 1919 mais un seul exemplaire a été construit

Il y a quelques lignes sur ce spad dans squadron spad fighter in action.mon anglais étant toujours déplorable je vous recopie le texte.spad XXII. The most unusual development of the spad single-seaters was the spad XXII. It utilized the fuselage of the spad XVII with radically redesigned wings. The upper wing had a pronounced sweep back, while the lower wing had an equally pronounced forward sweep. The accommodate this arrangement, the interplane bracing had to be drastically redesigned. The tail surfaces were also redesigned with horn-balanced elevators. The intent of this wing arrangement was to improve the pilote's visibility from the cockpit, one of the biggest complaints of earlier Spads. The Spad XXII was being test flown ac Buc during november of 1918, powered by a 300hp Hispano-Suiza 8Fb engine driving a two blade propeller, when the war ended. It proved unsuccessfull and, with the end of the war, further development was abandoned.
