"In each German Armee, was Kofl, directly subordinate to the Kofl, was the , the Jagdgeschwader the Bombengeschwader, The Grufls, the Armee Flugpark and Fl.Abt. Under the Grufl was a Jagdgruppen, Fl.Abt., Fl.Abt.A, Schusta or Schlasta. Under the Armee Flugpark was the Tank Stelle which were forward gas, oil and spare parts stations which were forward of the Army Air Park. The AFP took the number of the Armee, i.e., AFP4 was in the German 4.Armee.
The AFP were fixed base operation, in essence a large factory that did the major repair work. Also it was a equipment and personnel depot, it also held store all the spare pares, engines and spare parts for all the aircraft in the field. Each AFP held in store spare three aircraft and 3 ground personnel for each aircraft.(from each unit in that Armee), If there were 10 Jasta in that Armee, the AFP would have in store three aircraft for each Jasta of the type they were usings. That AFP would maintain a store of 30 fighters on hand for the 10 Jasta in that Armee. This also applied to all the other units, so the were 50 units in the Armee, that AFP would have in stores 150 aircraft and 450 ground personnel to maintain them and in addition all the personnel that did the repair work and training.
The Personnel waiting for assignment were encouraged to fly the aircraft and to gain more experience.
Now, no where did I say the AFP were in charge of any of these units, the AFP were responsible to these units, to maintain and have in stores replacement aircraft and personnel for assignment or issue when needed.
Between the AFP and Berlin Headquarters were two large Depots, Nord and Sud, North and South. All factory shipments of equipment went through these two large Depots. I think, that the Nord Depot took care of 4., 6.,17.,2., 18., and the 7.Armeen. The Sud Depot, the 1., 3., 5., C., 19., A.and B. Armeen.
In late 1918, the German Armies in the North were being pushed back, I think the Northern AFPs were moved further to the rear. Before Tthey were fairly set in one place."
