Grèbe-II — Patrouilleur auxiliaire. Ex-chalutier à vapeur.

Administrativement considéré comme bâtiment armé en guerre du 6 août 1915 au 27 novembre 1918 [Circulaire du 25 avril 1922 établissant la Liste des bâtiments et formations ayant acquis, du 3 août 1914 au 24 octobre 1919, le bénéfice du double en sus de la durée du service effectif (Loi du 16 avril 1920, art. 10, 12, 13.), §. A. Bâtiments de guerre et de commerce. : Bull. off. Marine 1922/14, p. 720 et 745 – Errata Bull. off. Marine 1922/21, p. 41.].

Le patrouilleur auxiliaire Grèbe-II, auparavant chalutier pratiquant la pêche hauturière, appartenait très probablement à la Société des Pêcheries de l'Océan, établie à Arcachon (Gironde).

Très probablement le chalutier "Grèbe" construit en 1898 par Earle's Co., Hull, comme "Lily".

À nouveau francais "Grèbe" après la guerre (Lloyd's Register 1920/21), exporté en 1928.
Puis devenu l'italien "Gloria", saisi par les Allemands en 1943 et sabordé à La Spezia 10.04.45.

Thank you, Klaus-Guenther. GREBE ex LILY then GREBE II became the Regia Marina vedetta dragamine PINGUINO, which curiously is not mentioned in any of the classic Italian almanacs and reference books (Bargoni, Fraccaroli, Pieroni, Giorgerini-Nani etc.). So I claim this small but signìficant addition to the list of WWI patrol vessels.
By the way, after the war PINGUINO/GREBE - which had had a new boiler fitted in 1918 - was purchased by an Italian owner as GLORIA and refitted in 1931 (she probably was only formally returned to her Arcachon owner, but in fact remained in Italy). She was requisioned by the Regia Marina on 1.6.1940 as the patrol vessel F 49, fell into German hands at La Spezia on 9.9.1943 while waiting for refit, was scuttled there 10.4.1945, raised and sold for breaking up in 1949.
