Le sous marin grec DELPHIN a été nolisé en 1916 et rendu en 1918

Bonjour Marc,

I can add some information for her greek carrer, but haven't found anything on the use of DELFIN by the french Navy.

26.08.1912 she was commissioned in the Royal Hellenic Navy
30.09.1912 – 05.10.1912 she was brought from Toulon to Piräus

During the Balkan Wars:
-on 22.12.1912 at 10.45h she missed the ottoman cruiser MECIDIYE with one torpedo off Bozca Ada, Dardanells (as far as I know the first torpedo fired by an submarine against an real target).
- at the End of January 1913 she had to do patrols in the Gulf of Athens together with torpedoboat NIKOPOLIS against the ottoman cruiser HAMIDIYE

In May 1915 during exercises with the other greek submarine XIPHIAS and torpedoboat NIKOPOLIS she suffered slight damage due to diving deep after an handling error by her crew, she was under repair until July 1915.

It's an great site about the life of the greek Admiral Mezeviris, who at that time (May 1915) was CO of the DELFIN!

She was seized by the French Navy in December 1916, in 1917 she was under french flagg but made no patrols, in 1918 she was returned to Greece.

Delphin — Sous-marin auxiliaire, ex-submersible grec (1916~1917).

Le sous-marin auxiliaire Delphin fut administrativement considéré comme bâtiment armé en guerre du 1er novembre 1916 au 17 août 1917 [Circulaire du 25 avril 1922 établissant la Liste des bâtiments et forma-tions ayant acquis, du 3 août 1914 au 24 octobre 1919, le bénéfice du double en sus de la durée du service effectif (Loi du 16 avril 1920, art. 10, 12, 13.), §. A. Bâtiments de guerre et de commerce. : Bull. off. Marine 1922 n°14, p. 720 et 737.].

Voici le Delphin à Toulon, semblable au Xiphias, ces deux sous marins ont été construits pour la Grèce à Chalon sur Saône, par le chantier Schneider; ils apparaissent souvent chez le chantier constructeur sous leur numéro de chantier: SC3 pour le Delphin et SC4 pour le Xiphias.

Bonjour à tous,

A gauche le DELFIN (XC3) qui avait été mis à l’eau à Chalon sur Saône le 2 Août 1911. A côté de lui, la mise à l’eau du XIPHIAS (XC4) le 26 Juin 1912.

Le sous-marin Delphin, construit à Chalon-sur-Saône sur les plans de l’ingénieur Alfred Maxime LAUBEUF par l’atelier du Petit-Creusot de la Société Schneider et Cie [Siège social : Paris, 42, rue d’Anjou (VIIIe Arr.)], fut mis à l’eau le 2 août 1911.

■ Historique (complément).

— 29 septembre 1912 : Appareille de Toulon à destination du Pirée, étant commandé par le capitaine de frégate Pararicopoulos (L’Excelsior, n° 685, Lundi 30 sept. 1912, p. 6).

— 11 octobre 1916 : Séquestré à Salamine (Grèce) avec le reste de la flotte hellénique.

— 1er novembre 1916 ~ 17 août 1917 : Intégré à la flotte française.

— 11 novembre 1920 : Avec 17 autres bâtiments, dont le sous-marin Xiphias, mis en vente à Athènes par le Ministère de la Marine hellénique selon la procédure d’adjudication publique.
