I can see that you have done a good deal of research on U 73, no need to list the minefields laid by her in the Aegean

So, here's my listing for U 73's minefield from 27.10.1916 off Pleve Is.

28.10.1916: ANGELIKI damaged
31.10.1916: KIKI ISAIAS sunk
20.11.1916: SPARTI damaged

20.11.1916: SPETZAI reported damaged, but I believe that's an false information !?

If you can find Captain's names and numbers of crew or so, this information will also be valuable.

For U 73's minefield from 20.12.1916 you forgot to list the PERESVET which is mentioned earlier in the text.

Also U 73's minefield from 22.12.1916 claimed the british Steamer BILSWOOD on 12.03.1917.

I send you the articles of the Greek newspaper EMPROS regarding the issues SPETZAI, SPARTI and ANGELIKI.
The dates of the articles are in accordance to the dates of the old Gregorean calendar. You have to add 13 days to have as a result the date of the actual (new) calendar.

SPETZAI, ex. ARIADNE – sank 8.9.1916 (new calendar) near Messina (Italy) coming from the Greek island of Skiros headed to Liverpool (England). SPARTI, ex. SAN FERNANDO – collision with a mine, few days after Angeliki exact in the same area, namely near the island of Phléves. In accordance to the testimonials it was not a result of torpedoing but a collision to a mine, most probably placed by U 73 (Kapitänleunant Gustav Siess), mine field no. 31 – Phléves. – s. the Greek article, SPARTI-Empros-8.11.1916 (old calendar), http://img193.imageshack.us/img193/1976 ... 111916.jpg
The next day the vessel was tug to port of Pereus. s. the article SPARTI-Empros-9.11.1916 (old calendar), http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/1552/s ... 111916.jpg – Some time later the vessel was repaired and was set again in duty. SPARTI renamed in GERZE and sank on 30.10.1935 near Anadoluburnu (Turkey). For U 73's minefield from 20.12.1916 you forgot to list the PERESVET which is mentioned earlier in the text.

P/S SPARTI

Owner: Pantaleon Steamship Company
Captain: first name unknown, family name Varoútsikos
Explosion: 4 meters from the bow after a collision with a mine.
Casualties: 4 persons, D. Karítsis (valet), Lukas Karás (bosun), I. Mesadás (sailor), D. Mátzas (passenger).

The ship was sailing from Thessaloniki (Salonique) having Pereus as the last destination. The vessel was carrying cargo (sheep and tobacco) and passengers. After the collision the Pantaleon Company send the vessel ANATOLI (also a Pantaleon owning ship) to help. Admiral Fournet also send the ships F/S GOLIATH and F/S COURS (? Maybe the name is not written correct) as supporters.
The 65 passengers were carried to the port of Pereus by F/S COURS. The cargo was moved on the board of the vessel ANATOLI and transferred also to Pereus.

V. les éléments de réponse figurant sous le sujet « SPAHI », Contre-torpilleur de 450 t, type Spahi (1910-1927).

« F/S COURS » : Il pourrait s'agir du cargo charbonnier Charles-Le Cour, de la la Société anonyme des chargeurs de l’Ouest. Ou peut-être du torpilleur anglais Scourge ?

15 h 10 – Hissé le youyou.

15 h 20 – Un torpilleur anglais fait exploser deux mines au S. de Phléva.

17 h 45 – Amené le berthon.

18 h à 20 h.

18 h 30 – Hissé le berthon 2.

18 h 40 – Correspondu à la voix avec le Polyphène.

18 h 45 – Fait route pour prendre la croisière de nuit.

20 h à 24 h."

ANGELIKI, KIKI ISAIAS and SPARTI: Correct except ANGELIKI, 29.10.1916 (new calendar) and SPETZAI 8.9.1916 (new calendar).

British sources say ANGELIKI was damaged on 28.10.1916 at 20:30h, maybe the difference is in the time (Greenwich Mean Time - Eastern Aegean Time) or so ?!

SPETZAI on 08.09.1916 was another vessel of 1904 g.r.t., sunk by UB 47 this day.

The SPETZAI in question should have 788 g.r.t., Hellenic Steam Navigation Goudi (J. Leonidas), Piraeus according to uboat.net


But again, very valuable information on this greek vessel SPARTI, thank you !

Hello Oliver,
the first SPETZAI (build 1891) belonged to the Koutsi bros.. The other one (build 1885), as you said, belonged to D.P. Goudis from 1895-1914, as the LRS informs.

I´ll check it out tomorrow, but I might say that I did not find nothing at all today in the papers from October and November 1916.
I will also inform you concerning the date of the ANGELIKI loss.
