Bonsoir,

Le "Lourd" est un piège qui pourrait nous faire penser à l'artillerie. Moi j'y vois des territoriaux, d'autant plus avec une organisation en compagnie et peloton, l'artillerie c'est en groupe et le 104e RAL sauf erreur n'est constitué quand octobre.

Le 104e RIT à Villers Franqueux, c'est tout bon.

The word "Lourd" ("Heavy") is a bit of a trap, as it could lead us to think of artillery. However, I believe these men are territorials, especially given the organisation into companies and platoons. Artillery units were organised into groups, and, unless I am mistaken, the 104th Heavy Artillery Regiment (104e RAL) was not formed until October.

The 104th Territorial Infantry Regiment (104e RIT) at Villers-Franqueux fits perfectly.

C'est une très belle photo. Merci de ce partage.
Le JMO du 104e RIT indique que la 6e Compagnie était au repos le 6 juin 1915 au château de Toussicourt.
L'adresse à Saint-Germain-Laval dans le département de la Loire est dans le bassin de recrutement de Roanne. En pièce jointe la fiche matricule d'un soldat Chevalerin du 104e RIT.
Pour comparaison, une photo de juin 1915 apparaît sur le site Chtimiste.

This is a very fine photograph. Many thanks for sharing it.
The war diary of the 104th RIT does show that the 6th Company was resting at Toussicourt castle on 6 June 1915.
The address at Saint-Germain-Laval, in the Loire département, falls within the Roanne recruiting area. I have attached the service record of a soldier named Chevalerin, who served with the 104th RIT.
For comparison, there is a June 1915 picture on the Chtimiste website (link above).

Quelques éléments complémentaires, à la lecture du JMO de ce régiment territorial.

La 6ᵉ compagnie qui apparaît sur la carte postale est composée de 251 hommes, capitaine Vabre, lieutenant Pivot. Elle alterne des périodes dans les tranchées de première et deuxième lignes ; des travaux et cantonnements à l'arrière.

Un soldat "Barnichon" apparaît dans le JMO le 2 janvier 1915, "blessé à la tête d'un éclat d'obus". Ce soldat Barnichon appartient à la 5ᵉ compagnie.

La 6ᵉ compagnie du 104ᵉ RIT ne participe pas à l’action des 16-17 février 1915 ; elle est en réserve à Toussicourt.
Concernant cette attaque des 16-17 février, sont cités à l’ordre de la Division (Ordre Général № 10 en date du 6 mars 1915) :

– Le Médecin Aide-Major de 1ʳᵉ classe Fumoux Jean, Félix, Louis, "à l'attaque du Bois du Luxembourg le 16 février 1915, n'a pas cessé, sous un feu très violent, de prodiguer ses soins aux blessés qui affluaient au poste de secours."

– Le soldat brancardier de 2ᵉ classe Roche Philibert de la 2ᵉ Compagnie, "s'est fait remarquer par son zèle, par son activité, par ses encouragements à ses camarades pour rechercher les morts jusqu'aux réseaux de fil de fer allemands."

Pour revenir à la 6ᵉ compagnie, elle compte des pertes le 31 mars 1915, où "le soldat Rondepierre de la 6e Compagnie est tué d'une balle à la tête au poste d'écoute du redan au secteur Luxembourg ; le soldat Bancillon de la 6e Compagnie est grièvement blessé par la même balle et évacué immédiatement sur Hermonville."

Le 2 avril, "violent bombardement du château de Toussicourt à 13h30 et vers 17h. Un soldat de la 6e Compagnie Theuil Antoine est légèrement blessé par éclat d'obus."

J’ajoute, pour être agréable à un forumeur britannique, notamment s’il a entendu tout l’été parler de "soccer", une belle photographie montrant des soldats jouer au football à Hermonville, où le 104ᵉ RIT était cantonné. Elle provient des fonds de la bibliothèque numérique La Contemporaine.

A few additional details from reading through the war diary of this Territorial regiment.

The 6th Company shown on the postcard consisted of 251 men, commanded by Captain Vabre, with Lieutenant Pivot. This company alternated between periods in the front- and second-line trenches, working parties, and billets in the rear.

A Private "Barnichon" appears in the war diary on 2 January 1915, "wounded in the head by a shell splinter". This Private Barnichon belonged to the 5th Company.

The 6th Company of the 104th RIT did not take part in the action of 16–17 February 1915; it was held in reserve at Toussicourt.
As regards the attack of 16–17 February, the following men were mentioned in Divisional Orders (General Order No. 10, dated 6 March 1915):

- Médecin Aide-Major, 1st Class, (a French army doctor), Fumoux Jean, Félix, Louis, "during the attack on the Bois du Luxembourg on 16 February 1915, never ceased, under very heavy fire, to attend to the wounded who were arriving at the dressing station."

- Private stretcher-bearer, 2nd Class, Roche Philibert, of the 2nd Company, "distinguished himself by his zeal, his activity, and by encouraging his comrades to search for the dead as far as the German wire entanglements."

Returning to the 6th Company, it suffered casualties on 31 March 1915, when "Private Rondepierre of the 6th Company was killed by a bullet in the head at the listening post of the redan in the Luxembourg sector; Private Bancillon of the 6th Company was severely wounded by the same bullet and immediately evacuated to Hermonville."

On 2 April, there was a "heavy bombardment of the Château de Toussicourt at 1.30 p.m. and again at about 5 p.m. A soldier of the 6th Company, Antoine Theuil, was slightly wounded by a shell splinter."

And, to offer some consolation to a British forum member after a summer saturated with the word "soccer", I am adding a fine photograph showing soldiers playing football at Hermonville, where the 104th RIT was billeted. It comes from the collections of the French digital library La Contemporaine.
