Bonjour, chers amis d'histoire;

I have been invited to participate here by Alain DuBois. I read French, but I write very poorly (my last class was in May 1955), but I can read responses in French or German.

I have just read Historique du 310e Regiment d/Infanterie, Libraire Chapolot, Paris, s.d., as found on www.cecile-meunier.club.fr . The history of the fighting at Verdun on February 22-26, 1916 is very curious; in particular it describes this unit fighting in the Bois de la Wavrille, which my map shows (also Village Warville itself) to be about 4-5 km north of the French-Geman front line. (I think that the French only reached this location in late 1918.) It also describes the unit pulling back a bit and suddenly being in bois des Fosses, which seems to be 8 km away to the south.

Is the history very incorrect? Or was there a second bois de la Warville to the south of the one on my map?

My father fought at Verdun, and was wounded twice. I have a piece of his left arm bone blown off by a French 75 splinter on Morte Homme on 28. 12. 16.

Hi Bob (and welcome)
I have no answer, but there are here as much specialists as on GWF (and Miami, and LA, ... )
You can post (in English) a short self-presentation, I began here : pages1418/qui-est-qui/procuration-sujet ... .htm#t3304

Bonjour Bob,

Je n'ai hélas pas la réponse à vos questions, mais soyez le bienvenu sur le forum, et bonne chance pour vos recherches. Nul doute que vous trouverez réponse ici.
Sorry for my response in french, but my english is...hum, a little bit poor.

Hi Bob,
Hi everydoy,
Bonjour Franck :D ,

There is an other Wavrille, near le Bois des Caures. And le Bois des Forges is not so far from this second Wavrille (south of this one).

Thanks everyone for the welcome.

Arnaud; many thanks for the explaination. I now feel comfortable with the history, which is useful if it is believable. My maps for France are some automaps Michelin and some maps from German official histories, which was what I used here. The map has so much information that it is quite hard to read. The south bois de Wavrille is depicted but not named, the north one, much larger, is named.

Arnaud, can you tell me where your map is from? Is it on-line, or a paper topographic map?

I have a large amount of research materials, particularly German material, and I would be more than happy to help people in this area, if I can. I for one will certainly have more questions on matters from the French side.

Bob, this map is on-line. You can search all that you want in differents scale maps (only for France) on the Géoportail web site.

Hi Bob,
I won't be able to help you either, sorry about that. Anyhow, welcome among us and... am I mistaken? I think we have already "met" on another forum, right?

Best regards,
