DIMITRIOS was taken to Haifa and she thus became the first of a series of ships that were arrested by the British forces. She remained idle there until she half sank and she was deleted from the Greek Register at the end of 1953.
C'est possible que le naufrage de DIMITRIOS etait renfloue et repare comme GAVRIEL.
Aussi en 1957 PROFITIS ILIAS etaite vendu et renome ELENI I, et son histoire finale n'est pas enregistrée.

Bonsoir,

The ship on the left of Dido's photo (coming from Paul Silverstone) is SAN DIMITRIO later LATRUN, ex SODRA SVERIGE, 733 grt/1871, built by Bergsunds at Stockholm, which arrived at Haifa on 1 Nov. 1946 with 1,279 Jewish (mostly Polish) refugees on board, one of 5 Swedish coastal steamers bought by Jewish buyers and put under the Panamanian flag. The Jewish refugees however were immediately brought back to Cyprus by her British captors.

SAN DIMITRIO, not DIMITRIOS...

About the sinking of TETI F. in February 1944, I might add that Byron Tesapsides in his "Die Kriegsmarine in der Aegaeis im II. WK 1941-1944" has a motorship or motor-schooner TEDDY F sunk by air attack on 29 Febr. 1944 in the harbour of Ios Island... No tonnage given...et pour cause!

43 Norwegian whalers purchased by the French Navy and 22 more by the Regia Marina in 1916...the whaling companies, with the sad lack of markets for their product experienced during the war, were selling out their whole fleets of whalecatchers!

Indeed Francesco, the same mistake is repeated at the webpage http://www.wertheimer.info/family/GRAMP ... 938c5.html
However the second photo at that webpage shows a ship that - with some imagination - could be an ex-whaler. What do you think?

I would rather say a former Kriegfischkutter or MFV (Motor Fishing Vessel). Whalecatchers always seemed to have lower hull sides, even if the toilet (?) on the port side resembles a whaler's...

A couple of photos of the ancient Regia Marina water tanker SARNO of 1889, hulked in 1930, scuttled by the Germans in La Spezia in April 1945 and raised post-war. From Stefano Danese and Silvano Benedetti, "300 Gli scafi affondati nel Golfo della Spezia e le operazioni per il loro recupero", Ediz. Cinque Terre, La Spezia, Febr. 2016.
A suggestion that the photo linked by Dido could rather be a former water tanker or similar.

dido a écrit : mar. oct. 06, 2015 8:36 pm AMBITIEUX was bought in 1920 by the established Greek shipowners Embirikos Brothers and renamed SIKINOS. She was sold by Embirikos in 1923 to Zambazas Brothers and she was used as a ferry between Patras, Kyllini and Zakynthos. In 1932 she changed hands and was converted into a cargo vessel being renamed TETI F. In April 1941 she was sunk by German aircraft at Megara but she was soon raised by the occupation forces. In February 1944 she was sunk, this time by Allied aircraft at Ios Island. After the end of the war the vessel was once again refloated and hastily repaired as the DIMITRIOS to illegally carry 220 Jewish immigrants to Palestine. Bearing the informal name BERL KATZNELSON she was spotted on November 22, 1945 by the British sloop PEACOCK off the coast of Palestine. DIMITRIOS was taken to Haifa and she thus became the first of a series of ships that were arrested by the British forces. She remained idle there until she half sank and she was deleted from the Greek Register at the end of 1953.
In November 1957 the cargo motorship PROFITIS ILIAS was registered in Piraeus as "under reconstruction in Perama". She was listed as: 125 grt, 29.86 x 5.22 m. The Piraeus Register mentions that she was "formerly named GAVRIEL under the flag of Israel, register number 37, and previously named DIMITRIOS."

DIMITRIOS was the last name of TETI F. and under that name she was abandoned and half sank in Haifa. It is probable that DIMITRIOS (ex-TETI F.) is the same ship as PROFITIS ILIAS (ex-GAVRIEL, ex-DIMITRIOS.)
The attached photo of ELENI I at Naxos. Her hull lines could originate from a former whale catcher.

PROFITIS ILIAS was sold again in 1957 and renamed ELENI I, but her later story is not recorded. She was never deleted from Piraeus Registry and she was deleted from Lloyd’s Register in 1977.
