One Hundred Years Ago : American Troops on the Crest of the Vosge

The “Chemin des Américains” (the American Trail) is well known to those who hike our mountain ridges. This trail connects the fields of Lauchenkopf to the alpine pastures of Oberlauchen. This is the story of those young American soldiers from the 6th and the 35th Infantry Divisions who inhabited our mountain peaks from July to October 1918. Fifty of which were buried in a makeshift cemetery in Oberlauchen. (photo)

With the threat of an attack from the German submarine U boats and the disclosure of the Zimmermann Telegram, an intercepted secret proposal for a military alliance between Germany and Mexico, the United States ended its neutrality by declaring war on Germany April 6, 1917.

Beginning in June 18, 1917 the 35th Infantry Division (nicknamed Santa Fe) was organized with 8,500 men from the Missouri National Guard and 14,765 men from the Ohio National Guard. Several units patrolled the mountain crest of the Haut-Florival, which was considered a “quiet defensive sector”, including the 138th, 139th, 140th Infantry Regiments, along with the 130th Machine Gun Battalion, the 129 Artillery Field Regiment as well as the 137th Field Ambulance Regiment.

The 138th Infantry Regiment reached Wesserling on June 24, 1918. On July 6, under enemy fire, an assault was conducted by 200 men along the mountain ridge way, resulting in two victims which were buried in Oberlauchen.

The 139th Infantry Regiment was deployed between Fellering and Metzeral. They reached the Front on July 20. On July 22, second lieutenant Charles Thomas HOPKINS from Wichita, Kansas was mortally wounded by machine gun fire in an attempt to rescue a fellow soldier who had gotten entangled in the network of barb wire. Then on August 7 Captain Alexander Morris ELLETT from Chillicothe, Missouri (photo below) would be gravely wounded when a hand grenade accidently exploded. He died before reaching the field ambulance and was buried the next day in Oberlauchen. After the remplacement of the 35th Infantry Division by the 6th Division, the 139th Infantry Regiment left its position in Kruth on September 1 to participate in the battle of Saint Mihiel (Meuse).

On July 20, 1918 the 140th Infantry Regiment arrived at the battle Front. Artillery fire coming from the Petit-Ballon and the raids of patrollers resulted in 17 casualties, including 4 victims killed by an exploding shell on the day of August 10. While attending their burial service, a soldier, Clarence ALTENTHAL, was injured and died from shrapnel.

From July 30 to August 31, 1918 the 130th Machine Gun Battalion fought along our mountain tops. (Breitfirst, photo below) They fought along side the infantrymen in front-line combat with the enemy. Each of the 8 Companies was composed of 178 men and equipped with 16 Hotchkiss machine guns. Five of which were lost on the mountain ridges, including four lost during the raids in late August

From August 23 to September 1, 1918, the 129th Field Artillery was engaged in combat along our ridges. This regiment is especially known for its Battery D, commanded by Captain Harry S. TRUMAN, future President of the United States. (photo below). His Battery was composed of 194 men, mostly catholics of Irish or German descent. The Regiment had no casualties in our mountains.

Starting from November 26, 1917, the 6th Infantry Division (nicknamed “Red Star”) began assembling its troops at Camp Forest, Georgia and Camp McClellan, Alabama. In large part, this Division united soldiers from the southern states. On August 27, the 6th Infantry arrived in the area of Gérardmer and took position in the Hautes-Vosges Mountains from August 29 to October 18. Later they moved their position to the Meuse-Argonne region from November 1 to 11. The Division lost 227 men, including 24 soldiers from the 54th Infantry Regiment killed on the Florival mountain ridgeway

The 54th Infantry arrived in the Thur Valley on August 29 reinforcing the French Artillary. On September 29, 1918 a missile fired into the trenches killed 9 soldiers. On October 11, the American Troops were relieved by the French Forces and descended to Kruth before joining the Lorrain slope by way of Bussang. 24 soldiers of the 54th Infantry were buried in Oberlauchen, including the young bugler Worth JOHNSON, 17 years old.

After the war, the remains of the French soldiers buried in the Haut-Florival makeshift cemeteries (Dauvillers, Gustiberg, Oberlauchen and Breitfirst) were transferred to the Waldmatt Cemetery in Guebwiller or to the Silberloch necropolis in Vieil Armand

The remains of the 50 Americans buried in Oberlauchen were exhumed in the Spring of 1921. 33 of the bodies were shipped back to the United States to be reburied with a memorial service in their honor and in the presence of their relatives. The other 17 fallen American soldiers were reburied in the “Meuse-Argonne” cemetery in Romagne-sous-Montfaucon (Meuse) which is the largest American necropolis in Europe

These young soldiers, who died so far from home, were considered heroes : their names would be used to form commemoration associations like the “Legion Post” or to name streets or schools.

On August 24, 1924 a granite monument (2,60 meters = 8 ½ feet high) with an engraved commemoration plate was inaugurated on site in Oberlauchen with the American Consul, Chester DAVIS, the sub-prefect DUROCHER of Guebwiller and troops from the 152th Infantry Regiment of Colmar attending.

When Nazi Germany troops invaded the valley in June 1940, all existing memorial sites were systematically destroyed. Most of these monuments were replaced after the war : at Dauvillers, Gustiberg and Breitfirst as well as the Brun Monument. Only Oberlauchen would be deprived of its memorial.

It is with the expressed intention to make amends, that the association “Souvenir Français” and the American Consulate have united forces for a Centennial Commemorative Ceremony to be held on September 29 of this year. In the presence of family members of slain US soldiers and along with the participation of the Associations “Alsace Etats-Unis Haut-Rhin” and “Amitié Florival-Magnoac-Trégor” as well as several local schools, the makeshift cemetery of Oberlauchen, the primary American graveyard on the Alsatian slope of the Vosges Mountains, will again be remembered for its historical value.
