indeed it was U 35 and the Germans identified the target as "Ernest Renan". Von Arnauld also claimed that the cruiser was escorted by an Primula class Sloop, which also turned and followed the cruiser ...

and, U 35 was the only submarine at sea on that day in that general area. U 38 and UB 47 far to the East of Malta ...

So, it's an faulty observation or it might have been an allied submarine on transit ... ?

Until right now I just knew the incident occured, but no details. UB 44 always was the U-Boat I was thinking of. We will have no proof of an sinking of course (until an wreck will be found), but at least the attack against UB 44 is very likely.
